Your retainers are the “insurance policy” for your smile, and caring for them correctly is essential to ensure they remain effective and hygienic for years to come.
The Golden Rule: If It’s Not in Your Face, It’s in the Case
The most common reason for retainer replacement isn’t wear and tear - it’s loss. Retainers are frequently wrapped in napkins during meals and accidentally thrown away, or left on bedside tables where curious pets can find them (dogs, in particular, are attracted to the scent of saliva on retainers).
Always store your removable retainers in the protective case provided by our administrative and clinical team. This habit prevents physical damage and ensures your “hardware” is always where it belongs when you are ready to wear it.
Cleaning with Clinical Precision
Because retainers sit against your teeth for hours at a time, they can accumulate plaque, tartar, and bacteria just like your teeth do.
- Daily Rinsing: Rinse your retainer with lukewarm water every time you remove it. This prevents saliva from drying and hardening into biofilm.
- Gentle Brushing: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive dish soap or specialized retainer cleaner. Avoid standard toothpaste, as many brands contain abrasives that can create microscopic scratches in the plastic, giving bacteria a place to hide.
- Deep Soaks: Periodically soak your retainer in a specialized orthodontic cleaning solution to remove stubborn mineral buildup.
Avoiding Heat Distortions
Modern retainers, particularly those used in our digital orthodontic innovation workflow, are made of medical-grade thermoplastics. While durable, these materials are sensitive to high temperatures.
Never use boiling water to “sanitize” your retainer, and never leave it in a hot car or near a heater. Heat can warp the precision fit of the appliance. If the shape of the retainer changes by even a fraction of a millimeter, it can no longer hold your teeth in their optimal, functional positions, risking a relapse of your alignment.
Monitoring Your Fixed Retainer
If we have placed a bonded (fixed) retainer behind your teeth, your care routine changes slightly. Because you cannot remove it, meticulous hygiene is paramount. Use “super floss” or a floss threader to clean the “wires” and the spaces between the teeth and the gums. This prevents the accumulation of calculus that can lead to gum recession or decay.
